Shorshe Ilish: Bengali Mustard Hilsa Fish Recipe 🐟🌿

Shorshe Ilish (Hilsa Fish in Mustard Sauce) is one of the most iconic Bengali dishes. This dish is a delightful combination of fresh Hilsa fish and a mustard-based gravy, known for its bold flavors. It's a perfect comfort food, especially when served with hot, steamed rice. Here's how you can make this traditional Bengali dish:


Shorshe Ilish Banano: Dorkar Upokoron:

  1. Ilish Maachh (Hilsa Fish) – 4-5 pieces 🐟 (about 500-600 gm)

  2. Shorshe (Mustard Seeds) – 3 tbsp 🌿

  3. Mustard Oil (Shorsher Tel) – 3-4 tbsp 🛢️

  4. Green Chilies (Bora) – 2-3 🌶️ (slit)

  5. Turmeric Powder (Halud) – 1/2 tsp 🌿

  6. Salt (Namak) – to taste 🧂

  7. Sugar (Chini) – 1/2 tsp (optional) 🍬

  8. Water – 1 cup 💧

  9. Coriander Leaves (Dhania Pata) – for garnish 🌱

  10. Lemon (Lebu) – 1 🍋


Shorshe Ilish Bananor Paddhoti:

1. Marinate the Fish:

  • Ilish maachh gulo bhalo kore dhoye, extra pani chhane niye niben.

  • Fish pieces er upor halud ebong namak diye 10-15 minute marinate kore rakhben. 🐟🌿

2. Prepare the Mustard Paste:

  • Shorshe (mustard seeds) gulo bhalo kore bhije rekhe, ekta smooth paste banate hobe.

  • Ekhane shorsher paste banate, kichu pani o add korte paren jate paste ta smooth hoy. 🌿💧

3. Cook the Fish:

  • Ekta boro frying pan e shorsher tel (mustard oil) garam kore, green chilies diye bhaja. 🌶️🛢️

  • Tel gormo hole, shorshe paste gulo diye, 2-3 minute bhalo kore bhaja. 🌿

  • Tarpor, ek cup pani diye, curry ta ranna kore, 5 minute dhore sim kora deben. 💧

  • Ekhon, fish gulo diye, 10-12 minute sim kore, jeno maachh bhalo bhabe sauce gulo absorb kore. 🍋

4. Final Touch:

  • Jodi chaile, ekti chhoto chini (sugar) diye curry r flavor balance korte paren. 🍬

  • Fish r gravy purai thik hole, dhonia pata diye garnish korben. 🌱

5. Serve:

  • Shorshe Ilish gulo garam garam serve korun, Bengali bhat (steamed rice) er sathe. 🍚

  • Ilish Shorshe er jhol er sathe jodi chutney ba kachumber rakhte paren, tahole aro maza asbe! 🍽️
